The eldar farseer wanted to know what various members of the ragged edge's favourite drinks were.

First cap off the rank is Conrad Raege herself. Who, while enjoying anything strong, smooth and not sweet is particularly fond of red wine.

something like that.  I'd imagine they'd need to be very different from typical eldar but not dark eldar either.

Now that I'm taking the time to make a more in depth comment on this I wanted to say that this and its sibling drinking posts are AWESOME.

There is so much to unpack and love here.  Seriously.

On a story perspective I wanted to highlight the fact that here I think we see the best image ever about Zune and Conrad's relationship because, even counting early images like the one where Zune took Conrad's hat....I think here is the best image I've ever seen of Conrad and ANYONE just being FRIENDS.  I mean, Conrad isn't the type to be friendly very often (she's a PTSD filled socially awkward and emotionally stunted child soldier after all) but here she isn't just being social with a co-worker.  She's JUST drinking with a friend and that is so rare, and special, and amazing to see in a picture.  A few more of these rare moments of Conrad just being a person.  Like her reading a book, or watching entertained by something would be amazing to see at some point.  Or even just her and Zune being good friends and showing that trust in each others presence that we see here.

Seriously, how many people alive can just poke Conrad in the chest (clearly what Zune is implying to do here, she's just short, Conrad tall, and Zune not committed enough to care) and joke together without some serious recompense.

When it comes to your sketches the faces almost always get the most detail from the medium.  Here it really shows the difference in these two women's bone structures.  You can really see Conrad's long face and pointed chin.  Plus thanks to the angle we get a real ideal of depth without needing any lines to show it.  The slight curve on the right side of Conrad's face shows how her broad cheekbones taper into her narrow chin.  On the flip side Zune's short, round skull is probably almost as broad from temple to temple as the woman she's poking in the belly in spite of a foot difference in height. (You're  in a metric country right?  What is that?  30cm?  Then again you DID give all edges heights in feet so...which system DO you use?)  But in spite of that AND having a narrow chin herself, you always draw Zune with a SHORT face as opposed to Conrad's LONG face, so they end up with TOTALLY different faces even though both have broad cheekbones, and Zune has such a wide head that the width of the two is almost the same!  It's really amazing how much nuance you manage in each character Mr. C

As for bodies I hadn't really realized till now but Zune isn't just STACKED, she's also CURVY.  I'd never realized that her hips are that broad but wow.  They're bigger than Conrad's and she's again, way shorter.  And as far as assets go, this picture goes SO far in showing the point you've often pointed out.  Conrad is a busty woman as well as a tall one.  Zune is AMAZINGLY well endowed (since she's based on Katachan-tan) that it's mind blowing.  I've pointed it out twice already but this not only shows off how HUGE Zune is in comparison, but since their height difference is so clear it shows off how big PROPORTIONALLY Zune is.  If she's bigger at that height, how big would she be if her and Conrad were eye to eye.

I also wanted to point out that while their left hands are roughs, their right hands are well done, Zune's is a BIT block but clearly gripping the bottle and drawn in a wide enough grip to accommodate the width OF the bottle's neck, but Conrad's is great.  Her thumb may be a bit long but her fingers are rounded, and arrayed like they're holding and pointing really naturally.

Finally: I've always loved Raege's preference for suspenders out of uniform.  Suspenders on women is just a great look and you have them draping naturally over her assets very well (though I HAVE seen busty women both drape them over, AND push them around so either certainly works)

Also:  On a scale of 1-10 how do the edges rate their commander's ass since clearly they have ALL seen plenty of it?  Of course nobody can really approach unless approached in that sense since she's in charge but still...I'm sure it's talked about.

Honestly of all the friendships, or even relationships in general (hateful, romantic etc) Zune and Conrads is high up amongst my favourites. It's a fairly natural and honest one. Raege respects the major because of her fighting prowess, capacity for planning and the charisma, faith and loyalty she commands but views her as something of a slob because of how she is when not on the job (Conrad never skips a gym day, Lockwood basically just does maintenance.) On the flip side, Zune admires Raege due to her fierceness, martial prowess and experience but also kind of thinks she's a pretentious emotional coward. Together, though, they have enough to work with. Conrad is leagues older, but spent 40 years out of any real action so that gives them enough to talk about. Different hard paths, same destination. Zunes lack of social pretension actually puts Conrad at ease in many ways. Zune admires her, but calls her on her shit. There's no fear or worship going on.

Zune is the only one who gets to poke Raege. Inquisitor or not, she would twist Levy's finger if he did the same. WHich he would expect. Then do it anyway. Then laugh about it.

There is not quite a foot in height difference between them, so it 's fairly dramatic. It's weird here. We are absolutely on the metric system but use imperial measurements for heights. Often, people will know their height in cms as well, but most people will say they're something foot something. Just cause.

Zunes physiology is important to me. In previous pictures I have choked and drawn her breasts too small, but I have non pervy (oddly enough) reasons for them being like that. It's something I believe in. It's the closest thing I have to a crusade. Which is to say I basically don't have one.

Suspenders are amazing. I feel like thats a huge factor in my focus on the later years of the Ragged edges timeline. Conrad didnt wear them for the first 5 years. That's no good.

Regarding butts: it will comedown to a persons preference (what Minhelm values in a butt and what Jacobi values in a butt will be two different butts) but even accounting for the variety of different preference aboard and allowing for the frequency of nice butts of both sexes on board it's safe to say Lockwood probably averages a strong 8/10 with most people.

Glad to hear I'm right about Conrad and Zune being among eachother's closest friends.

I'm sure poking Raege is also like poking a brick wall given her training regiment, especially in later years.

Measurements are wierd

Well I'm glad that you take things like character builds and models seriously.  It helps solidify character images a lot.  You could black out most of your pictures and I could still pick out who is who.

I drastically prefer suspenders.  They're more comfortable on me and look amazing on women.  Just need to get them to be popular again.

Butts: Makes sense and very true about posteriors in general, but I'm glad to hear Zune's is well rated...I feel like Cuddles would be another highly rated one, all be it one that also provides both 'yes boners' and 'why boners' depending on the guardsman.

Zune definitely has more friends than Conrad and probably has a handful she gets along with better, but her relationship with Conrad is special. There is a mutual respect/disrespect between them that is probably good for both of them. Raege has a much smaller inner circle, existing much more as a concept or a symbol to a majority of troops, but she does also have a friend with whom she has shared most of her lifes memories with and visa versa, so it's going to be hard to beat that sort of understanding. I'm not certain this is making sense.

Raege believes in core day, yes. A weak abdominal wall can make a lot of difference on the battlefield.

Yes they are.

Butts: Cuddles', on account of her build, height and choice of outfit is definitely a standout. To many, she is still just a rumour aboard the ship or a distant spectre on the horizon of the front line, but those who would offer an opinion generally rate it highly, even when they are repulsed by the rest of her.  It's why I was nervous about drawing it. It kind of has to be amazing. That's one of her jokes.

Well you've accomplished with Cuddles's butt so far.  The fact that it's at or above eye level of many Edges when she's un-restrained doubtless helps.

I developed the habit of using drinking vessels that are hard to break because I'm incredibly clumsy, but I must admit once wine is of a certain quality, I will put it in a glass. Or vase. Which is just a big glass really.

Absinthe and wine sounds like a pretty wild drink. Do you got a name for that?

A vase is truly just a large glass, though I do prefer to drink many small portions rather than one large one.
the temperature affects the taste of the drink, and if you take too long to drink it it has to be re-balanced.

Absinthe and wine has a really unique flavor. Its gotta be real wormwood absinthe, and its gotta be a bitter red though. A Cabernet is a good choice.
What would you even call such a drink?

The quality of the beverage determines the enjoy-ability of imbibing it.
Creating such a drink requires some level of skill.
Centuries of work, generations of vinters come and go tweaking and perfecting some of the best drinks in the world.

So in a way you are showing respect to the craft.

Hilarious notes: they've now proven wine tasters are full of it and 90% of wine can't be differentiated from one another, including between many types of white and red.  They have also proven that the enjoyability of most drinks is tied into the psyche of the drinker and what they think they are drinking as opposed to what they are actually drinking.

Tell me there is not a difference between cheap and expensive scotch with a straight face.
Reply
:icondaggerhammer:
Daggerhammer Featured By Owner Sep 13, 2017
Of course there's a difference.  The price!  The actual quality of the product is not guaranteed by that.... many middling cost scotches are MUCH higher quality than high cost scotches.  Like with running shoes and t-shirts, most of what you are paying for is the name.  A fancy bottle and good reputation is NOT a guarantee of quality.  After all, what you consider good scotch I could easily consider complete swill.  Nobody can dictate to ME what is a quality drink just because they put a fancier label on it and paid some celebrity to endorse it, I drink what I like, and let me tell you, top shelf ANYTHING is ALWAYS inferior to at least one thing that falls middle-to-cheap, in my experience.  Sake, scotch, gin, rye, vodka, absinthe, wine, you name it.  The exception being Chartreuse, where the main factor is age, since actual chartreuse is pretty well always the same between the green, yellow, and white varieties (good luck getting a bottle of white chartreuse though.... if any exist they're probably more valuable than an entire gold mine since they haven't made any since 1900) and even there many people prefer the middling bottles over the really old stuff.  You can't put liquor on a sliding scale as if they all stand in a line, even among the same type.  There are dozens of factors that may make someone dislike one brand of scotch over another, price be damned.  The only way you can line that up in an arrow-straight scale is if price is the only scale you go by and if that's the case, have fun with THAT particular illusion.  Or if you go by how quickly something gets you plastered, in which case yes, older and thus more generally expensive drinks which have converted more sugar to alcohol likely ARE better by that standard.

Now, are barrel dregs comparable to a properly made liqueur?  Not often.  But if you're going to compare extremes, go-karts aren't as good as indie 500 racers, helidrones sure can't outrace a 757, and a pea shooter isn't likely to win you accuracy contests against a dedicated marksman's rifle.  But if one bottle of scotch comes up at 75 bucks and another at 115, my experience has ALWAYS been that they are practically the same thing in most regards, with one having more advertising, fancier labels and bottles, and being sat on a higher shelf as a result to make it look elevated.

Straight enough for you?  Oh and by the way, I used to be a secretary for a company that handled a variety of products, and I got to talk to plenty of the quality control guys in a lot of fields.  They all say the same: all they have to do is make YOU, the consumer, THINK something is better in some ways and you will invariably hold it to high regard.  Liquor companies were some of our biggest clients and over half of them drank brands other than what they produced out of preference for the taste because they had that illusion shattered by working around the stuff.

You're welcome.
