I wander if perhaps the Mask belonged to a more combat vicious brother or father before Gustav got a hold of it and he feels that he can channel their combat prowess while wearing it.
Masks/Gasmasks do give the wearer a feeling of detachment in combat that can assist in battle stress afterall.
